Who We Are

We are a charity with a rich history of support for the neuro community.

Previously known as the Brain & Spine Foundation, we have rebranded to i-Neuro to highlight our focus on supporting the neurological community globally through innovative research, as well as emphasize the continuity between our professional services and our two major programmes: NeuroLifeNow and Neuro Changemakers.

Neurological conditions present a unique challenge. There are over 600 unique conditions, yet specialists are rare, thinly spread and seldom cover more than a dozen conditions. We are developing the two-part solution to this challenge: the development of the i-Neuro Census, and building the Institute for Neurological Life Sciences in partnership with a leading UK University.

Understanding Neuro

What is Neuro?

Over 600 neurological conditions affect the brain, its spinal cord, the peripheral and autonomic nerves that together control everything we are and do. Globally, they impact 3 billion people. They affect people of all ages.

  • In the womb: Spina bifida and anencephaly
  • Babies: Hydrocephalus, intraventricular haemorrhage, cerebral palsy
  • Children: Brain tumours (their most common cancer after leukaemia)
  • Teenagers: Meningitis and epilepsy
  • Young Adults: Head injuries (including concussion), MS, MND, Guillain-Barré, Huntington's
  • Older Adults: Parkinson's, stroke, and the growing tide of dementias

Neuro's Unique Challenges

  • Neuro is Common: It is the biggest global healthcare problem, causing more deaths than cancer and heart disease combined and is the leading cause of disability.
  • Neuro is Complex: With over 600 conditions, early and accurate diagnosis is crucial. Traditional healthcare methods are insufficient; a smarter, AI-driven solution is needed.
  • Specialists are Rare: Neuro is one of the smallest specialties, with the majority of hospitals lacking dedicated neuro units.

A Two-Part Solution

  1. The i-Neuro Census: A UK-wide pan-neuro survey of patient experiences in specialist and non-specialist care, and the outcomes of that care, forming a test bed for smart solutions.
  2. The i-Neuro Institute: In partnership with a leading UK University, the institute will analyse data to support the development of smart medicine, utilising AI-solutions to improve neurological care.
